Unified Messaging (UM) in Exchange 2013

Unified Messaging allows you to tap into your voice messaging along with email messaging - for example you can access your voicemail (via your inbox or via Outlook Voice Access) and configure call answering rules.

Fundamentally Exchange 2010 and 2007 used to have a separate roll altogether for UM, although in 2013 the roles features has been split between the CAS (which hosts the Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging Call Router service) and the Mailbox server (which hosts the Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging service.)
