When creating virtual machines take in too consideration creating virtual machine disks as thick provisioned - doing this theoreticaly creates the blocks on the disk in the same block space and prevents degragmentation - where as with thin-provisioined disks you their growth is speradic and the spindle will not always be in the same block space.
Degragmenting drives will help block lookup times - since the block data will be close to each other - also bare in mind when defragementing a hard drive to take into account the following:
- Making sure free space in consolidated - this process ensures that all blocks which contain data are together and that blocks with free space are saeparated.
- Ensure the operation is performed during a period of which users are not active i.e. weekend etc
