Setting up JunOS 12.1 (Olive) with GNS3

For this setup I am presuming you have already installed GNS3.

We will need to firstly ensure VirtualBox (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads) is installed and that you have downloaded the JunOS virtual appliance:

Note: The above you not be used for commercial purposes at all - as well as being outdated, it is not supported at all by Juniper and should be used for developmental and testing purposes only.

From VirtualBox we do a: File >> Import Appliance, specifying our ova image.

It is also worth ensuring that the NIC attached to the VM is in bridging mode:

VM >> Properties >> Network.

and adding 1 or 2 extra interfaces - since by default it only provisioned one in my testing.

Note: The VM might take a little while to initialize on lower end systems, so be patient.

At the login prompt we can simply login with root (no password.)

and verify the JunOS version with:

show version brief

We should then promptly set the root password:

conf
set system root-authentication plain-text-password
set system host-name JUNOS

and then we can configure the em0 interface with:

set interface em0 unit 0 family inet address 10.0.0.100/30
commit

We should be able to verify this with:

run show interfaces em0 detail

and then attempt to ping your default gateway to verify connectivity:

run ping 10.0.0.1

We should now hook up Virtualbox with GNS3 by firstly pointing it to our VBoxManage executable:

GNS3 >> Edit >> Preferences >> VirtualBox >> 'Path to VBoxManage'.

Note: This will typically be: C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxManage.exe

Then hit the 'VirtualBox VMs' tab and add our newly created VM.

You should then see the VM (JunOS Olive) available 'End Devices' tab within GNS3.
