NETBIOS - What does it do and why do we need it?

NETBIOS is required even on network with a forest / domain level equal to Server 2012 R2 for the following components:

- Joining a computer to the domain.
- Network and Printer Browsing (this is because this feature listens for NETBIOS boradcasts in order to pickup hosts)
- WINS
